SMIDSY’d

October 30, 2009

My partner is breast feeding our 7 day old son, Noah following a tricky delivery which resulted in an emergency C-section. For the last four days I have worked on becoming a domestic god helping my partner in every conceivable way whilst she recovers from surgery and tends to our son.

Unfortunately, I was today forced into semi-retirement, at least for now as far as being a domestic god is concerned. A fairly normal-sounding trip to Mothercare to collect a couple of nursing bra’s for my beloved turned into a living nightmare.

I was filtering past very slow moving traffic on the off-side – up ahead of me a motorcyclist was doing the same. A driver up ahead turned right without checking his mirrors or signalling his intent. The motorcyclist was unceremoniously knocked to the ground. I called a paramedic to check the condition of the cyclist and the police to obtain an incident number. Even though noone was hurt the police attended.

Having left my details, I continued on my way. I didn’t get very far until I found myself getting dumped on the road in the exact same way as the motorcyclist was, by the driver of a new five door Toyota Rav4. This driver decided to try and use a dead ended road on the right hand side to make a U-turn. Only he didn’t check his off-side mirror and moved off a tiny fraction of a second after signalling his intent. I saw the indicator flash, having been watching for the repeater lights on the front wing, but I was already level with the front of the off-side rear quarter panel and with all my speed scrubbed off, the vehicle still clipped my front wheel and brought me down onto my left arm.

After exchanging details, the driver was keen to leave the scene because he had his family in the car. I’m now sat here with a broken elbow unable to care properly for my family because of that driver’s momentary lapse in concentration. And although I was given the driver’s details, the police officer who put them in my bag didn’t do a very good job as three searches of said bag by me and one by my partner have failed to yield them.
